We remember when highlighting first became a *thing*. Mostly because we allowed our love of sparkly stuff to lead to one too many uninhibited shopping sprees, resulting in the collection of a half-dozen products that, while pretty, we had no clue what to do with. Um, help?

In this series, we’ve partnered with Sephora to demonstrate how to cop the perfect highlight for pretty much every occasion. After all, the level of wattage you’re after during a big work meeting is very different than, say, a night out. Thanks to our handy glow meter guide, you’ll know exactly how much shine to expect (from buttoned-up to blinding). Happy highlighting!

Doing your makeup for anything work-related always feels like a little bit of a balancing act. Sure, there are an increasing number of workplaces that are cool with a little self-expression via extreme use of blue eye shadow (as they should be!). But for most of us, the office isn’t usually the first place that comes to mind when we contemplate busting out a shimmery cheekbone. Sometimes you truly do want your face to be likened to a disco ball—this is not one of those times. Especially while, say, negotiating for a raise, or planting the seed for a promotion. Sound familiar? What you *do* want is more likely a pretty, slightly dewy, totally natural glow. Here’s how to get it.

1. Dispense a small amount of Marc Jacobs Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter onto the back of your hand.

2. Pick up the product with a damp blending sponge and apply to high points of the cheek and bridge of the nose, using a dabbing or patting motion.

3. Using Sephora Collection Pro Brush #59 (for precision powder), sweep Kevyn Aucoin The Neo-Limelight highlighter across high points of cheek.
