5 Things You Might Not Have Seen—But Should—Before the Golden Globes

This morning, the nominees for the 74th Golden Globe Awards were announced. The ceremony has recently been a bit...fraught. When Ricky Gervais hosted last year, he referred to Caitlyn Jenner as Bruce and joked about how much more he was paid than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (bring them back!) when they hosted previously. Woof. This year, Jimmy Fallon will be hosting when the show airs January 8th, and we’ll absolutely be watching—and rooting for our favorites.

While almost everyone we know has seen La La Land and Stranger Things (both are great!), there are a few films and performances that made a quieter splash, but absolutely deserve awards and attention. Here are just a few things to watch (and cheer for!) this awards season.

Moonlight - Best Movie, Drama

Moonlight is one of the most powerful and beautiful films we’ve ever seen. Directed and written by Barrie Jenkins, it follows a young gay black man, Chiron, growing up in the projects around Miami. It’s breathtaking, and quietly heartbreaking.

Naomie Harris - Best Supporting Actress in a Movie, Moonlight

A large credit for that heartbreaking-ness goes to Naomie Harris, who plays Chiron’s drug-addicted mother. She’s beyond-belief incredible in this role, and totally deserves a win.

Elle - Best Foreign Film

Isabelle Huppert plays a French woman who is raped in her home, and after feeling suspicious of everyone around her, (spoiler alert) ultimately gets revenge. It’s super-empowering—albeit in a pretty dark way.

Issa Rae - Best Actress, TV Musical/Comedy

We love Insecure and Issa Rae. She might not be so under-the-radar, but we’re hoping she can win this year over longtime winner Julia Louis Dreyfuss (we love you, Julia!). Her show is funny, but also sad in a super-realistic way. She’s hilarious, but also an amazing actress.

Tom Ford - Best Director, Nocturnal Animals

Yes, the Tom Ford! His film, Nocturnal Animals, is stunning in a very Tom Ford-esque way. If for no other reason (though there are loads of other reasons), see this for the clothes.
