How to Wear Velvet This Fall

Looking like a glam rock star is pretty much exactly our goal this fall. In collaboration with Bergdorf Goodman 5F.

The fall’s approach means more clothes, which is an undeniably good thing. Not just more in the sense that a change in seasons gives us an excuse to go shopping and buy—that’s obvious. But meaning we can actually wear more clothes at one time. This fall we want layers of velvet on jewel-toned velvet. We want all the richness that David Bowie-as-Ziggy Stardust would approve of. We want going-to-a-Roxy-Music-show fabulousness, but at 2016 speed.

It sounds intimidating, we know, but it’s not. All it takes is some well-coordinated sparkles and plush velvet—which, trust us, will make getting dressed at 8 AM (or 11 PM, if that’s more your style), that much more fun.

Take one part Tanya Taylor or MSGM floral-embroidered bomber jacket (the bomber jackets this season are goooood). The brighter and richer the embroidery, the better. Then, take two parts glitter and shine—preferably in the form of flowing, somewhat sheer Opening Ceremony disco pants or mini (really, really mini) dress. Then pile on the velvet (allllll the velvet). It’s an emerald green suit that works equally well in the boardroom or on the dance floor! It’s a navy shift dress with matching stacked-heel stocking boots! Either way: all the velvet. Then, take sunglasses, a rich red lip, and a golden halo of a headdress. Mix, match, pile it all on. It’s fun, remember?! Ziggy would be proud.
