How to Fight Heat Exhaustion in 60 Seconds

This is not a drill.

How to Fight Heat Exhaustion in 60 Seconds
We’re back to our love/hate relationship with the sun. Sure, all is well and good when you’re spending the day sprawled out on the beach or hitting up your favorite hiking spot, but what about when, three or four hours into your day, you become so exhausted you’re convinced you haven’t slept all week? Heat exhaustion is real, friends, and it’s something to take very seriously. Even more seriously than finding that perfect Instagram filter.

Extreme cases of heat exhaustion can result in a trip to your local hospital, so let’s work to avoid that. Take note of the below tips so you can spend your summer days pool-hopping and, well, not burnt out. Literally.

Drink Water

Heat exhaustion typically comes from water or salt depletion in your body. When your body sweats, it’s attempting to regulate your core temperature. So if you’re not consuming more liquids than you’re sweating out, well, you’ve got a problem, and that’s when you’re going to start feeling sluggish and downright lazy. So do what you’ve always known is right, and drink up. I mean, your skin will thank you too, so it’s really a win-win.

Wear Loose Clothing

I know what you’re thinking: You worked your ass off all winter so that you can now wear that itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny, yellow polka-dot bikini, and theres no way in hell you’re going to forgo your (also small) dresses for a baggy tee. But hear me out. Like I was saying before, in order for your body to keep cool, it needs to sweat, and let me tell you, that skintight dress isn’t allowing you to sweat it all out the way your body needs to. Thats not to say there arent stylish ways to dress to sweat. As always, we have you covered.

Avoid the “Good” Stuff

Nobody wants to spend their weekend or, if we're being honest, even their week sans sangria. But aside from making you feel like you’re on top of the world and a straight-up boss, both coffee and alcohol are major dehydrators. So unless you’re going to be spending the day in the shade or you’re literally just going to have one glass (and when does that ever happen?), then we suggest you steer clear while you’re out in those UV rays.

Facial Mist

Consider this our hero product—the one we can’t go anywhere without. If you’ve ever used a facial mist, then you’ll know why this is our summer ’16 savior. It may not be a long-term solution, but it does provide instant gratification and leaves you feeling refreshed. Which, when its approximately one billion degrees out, is about all you can hope for.

Cool the F Down

When all else fails and you’re in close proximity to a store, restaurant or, even better, your house, go revel in all of air-conditioning’s glory. And if youre doing this from said home, then treat yourself to a cold shower. The cool water will help bring your body temperature down a few notches and should have you feeling like your usual spirited self in no time.
