9 Fashion Buyers' Picks for Fall

Autumn's sartorial arrival has been bombarding our newsfeeds, Net-a-Porter sessions and September issues as of late, officially reminding us that the end of summer is imminent (no matter how hard we cling to our beach chairs). And while we aren't completely ready to forfeit our uniform of eyelet dresses and espadrilles in favour of chunky knits and closed toed shoes, we'll at least allow our imaginations (and digital shopping carts) to wander. Herein, nine fashion buyers from our favorite shopping destinations tell us what they're stocking up on from this season's crop. Dramatically embellished leather heels, a hot pink coat that would make Barbie proud, shearling capes decorated with fringe and, of course, the obligatory pair of flares (that also happen to be in the prettiest brocade). Add these to your shopping bag now and you'll be ready when the first leaves fall—that's our rationale, at least. If that's not proactive planning, we don't know what is.

Buying Director, Browns

“The embellished shoe, it’s the whole new way to make a statement. Red was hot for AW15, take these Dorateymur shoes, they add that perfect edge to any outfit. Denim continues to be a strong contender for AW15 and the sequins on this Ashish jacket take it to a whole other level. This leopard Saint Laurent dress reminds me of my favourite Madonna song. Fluff love, this Dries van Noten gilet is the perfect mid season piece and who doesn’t love a bit of fluff!”

“Heavier layers (finally not as the result of your office AC blasting) and richer hues, burgundy specifically, scream fall. This season it's a throwback to the ‘70s: silhouettes (flares), detailing (fringe) and fabrics (shearling, denim, suede). Prepare to #TBT your look next to your mother's; it's a revival!”

“I’m all about re-invention and I’m always about re-inventing the eighties (with a little nineties thrown in). I love fashion that feels music inspired. This are pieces that will make you smile in your closet… and relive a favorite music video! Because Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

“I am definitely feeling the dark side of fall. There is a beautiful androgyny to winter which is glamorous yet reckless. Makes me think of a vampire princess. Really cool! The biggest revolution since Hedi Slimane took over Saint Laurent is the revival of Gucci. Alessandro Michele is taking one of the world’s best known brands to another dimension. The Dionysus bag is the bag of the season. One of the best shows of the season was Altuzarra. He is one of the talents of the industry and his fall show was very influential in shaping the season’s dark side. Who doesn’t want to be a princess? [Valentino's] Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioliare design geniuses. If I was a girl then I would be wearing this rock pink mink every day. This is one of the coolest pieces for AW15. If Elvis was still alive he would be so jealous of these ankle boots!”

“We love this nomadic looking shearling from Chloé—perfect for our customers who are world travelers. This sharply tailored double breasted jacket from Balmain is smart enough to head to work during the day but cool enough to throw on over your little dress or jeans at night. Fringe gets all dressed up with Andrew Gn’s soutache trimmed cape with suede fringe and Mongolian lamb collar. These Self Portrait lace dresses are such a staple item right now. They're perfect to dress up with heels or down with a cute pair of oxfords and are timeless! Stay warm this winter in this luxe fur lined army coat by Yves Salomon.”

“There was an artisanal glamour seen across the shows this season with designers experimenting with pasementeire, handcrafted brocade and embroidered tapestry–think luxe artisanal glamour–the mood may be bohemian but the craft is pure couture. Accessory-wise, it is all about a retro heel this season with a chunky heel mandatory. Every designer had their take on the trend from wooden soled platforms at Rachel Comey, to Mary Janes at Saint Laurent, Sophia Webster and Gianvito Rossi. Channel the seventies trend seen across the runway this season and pair some block heeled platforms with a floral maxi dress as seen at Valentino or for a sugary alternative to the 1970s look to Erdem and wear your glossy Mary Janes with an A-line mini dress

I love the bags from Tomasini Paris they are beautifully made with each piece hand-sewn by local artisans from Italy and finished with a modern, chic French touch. The Marques’Almeida brocade pieces stood out for me this season, so much so that we collaborated with them on our own limited edition capsule collection. It is all about the over-the-knee boot this season and these Nicholas Kirkwood boots are a favourite of mine. Channel the ‘70s boho vibe seen across the runway! My eyes and everyone else’s are on Vetements this season—a highly creative collective of designers. I love their oversized outerwear and sweatshirting. I love the second collection from our in house label Raey—the utilitarian, masculine and effortless spirit with an emphasis on clothes for real life. This Raey suede skirt is definitely a key staple for my autumn/winter wardrobe.”

Leila Yavari

Fashion Director, STYLEBOP.com

“The mood for fall definitely felt darker and more romantic than in seasons past, which made AW15’s Victorian-inspired pieces especially appealing. Valentino and Alexander McQueen in particular did an excellent job of reimagining romantic ornamentation and embellishment for right now.”

Carol Song

Buying Director, Opening Ceremony

“I can't describe how this Issey Miyake classic silhouette coat makes me feel other than I know if I don't have it in my closet I should just quit my job and do something different, yeah something like that. It's timeless for my children to enjoy and appreciate some day and this shade of yellow is so unique you will continually be stunned by it. Forget about the black patent boot this season, it's all about the white patent boot now! This Courrèges ribbed turtleneck sweater is a staple piece to go with anything and everything. I want an embroidered Courrèges logo on every single staple piece I own, don't you? The culotte trend has finally passed but these sporty drawstring waist cropped pant is the next best thing! I’ve been wearing oversized men's shorts to get the look but Y’s does the baggy men's shorts reinvented for the women’s silhouette absolutely perfectly. A cozy cheetah faux fur fanny pack—the new fall necessity to wear just about everyday.”

Laure Heriard Dubreuil

Founder and CEO, The Webster

“One can never have enough white blouses; the high neckline and buttons on this Rosie Assoulin update the classic white blouse making this a must have! This season Adam Lippes collaborated with one of my favorite NY based florist’s Putman & Putman on exquisite print that is both poetic and beautiful without feeling too precious. I am obsessed with this CVC Stones collection! I have already accumulated a few necklaces and each piece is so special--the beautiful polished one of a kind stones remind me of childhood memories of my siblings and I collecting stones by the sea from our family travels each summer. We were always so excited to come home and share what we found; now my girlfriend’s and I compare our necklaces! The combination of a happy floral print and easy silhouette make this Valentino a perfect fall wardrobe update. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli are true masters, I recently had the opportunity to travel to Rome to see their couture show and I was absolutely mesmerized, not only by the exquisite clothing but also by the magical city—I always feel like a Roman empress in their pieces! Alber Elbaz’s playful spirit is always apparent in his collections for Lanvin and this clutch is no exception! The strong leopard print and clean, modern shape make it very easy to incorporate into any wardrobe without ever being vulgar.”

Chloé’s cape coats are perfect to get a headstart into the new season. The cape brings the summer boho festival feeling forward for fall! Saint Laurent’s Paris booties are the ideal mood balance: a hint of western yet stiletto sexy. We all adore flared and frayed denim! Add a shrunken boy-blazer for seventies silhouette. Dolce’s jewelbox bags are heirloom worthy. The special evening bags for the season go above and beyond the basic. Step up! Obsessed with this future iconic print. We love a whimsical floral. Sacai’s subversive blouses add a quirky-intelligent vibe to your classic wardrobe staples.”
