Your Ultimate Hair Product Guide
Whether fine, curly, wavy or straight, Joan Smalls’ hairstylist tells us the products we need to know.

Our at-home beauty department can be broken down into three categories: the everyday essentials (i.e. our Maybelline Great Lashes, dry shampoos and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Creams of the world); the fancy essentials, for nights out and/or "spontaneous" run-ins with the ex (yes, we obviously just woke up like this); and everything else (A.K.A. every single product that we've accumulated since moving into our current abodes, whether by gift, rosé-fuelled midnight online shopping haul, or artful scissors-in-hand hairdresser persuasion tactic). In other words, our momentary obsession with Hoarders did not transpire completely out of nowhere.
We turned to Jennifer Yepez, tress-whisperer to the likes of Gigi Hadid, Salma Hayek and Joan Smalls to give us a little tried-and-true texture-specific guidance on what products you should use for your individual hair type
In our defense, however, how is one to know what works for them until they've tried it all? An issue we especially face in the hair department—what proves as a miracle cream for your friend’s thick wavy hair, leaves your own thin wavy hair, heavy and lank. So in an attempt to ease up on our uneducated buy-it-just-to-try-it product purchasing (and lighten our impending credit-burden) we turned to Jennifer Yepez, celebrity and fashion tress-whisperer to the likes of Gigi Hadid, Salma Hayek and Joan Smalls—natch—to give us a little tried-and-true texture-specific guidance on what products you should use for your individual hair type—whether fine, curly, wavy or straight.
Straight
Fitting with its moniker, whether thick or fine, straight hair naturally falls flat. To add some movement and body, aim for lightweight thickening products that will create texture and shape without the addition of extra heaviness.
SHAMPOO:
R&Co DALLAS Thickening Shampoo and Kérastase Cristalliste Bain Cristal
CONDITIONER:
R&Co DALLAS Thickening Conditioner and Kérastase Masque Cristal
STYLING:
R&Co DALLAS Thickening spray and R&Co CHIFFON Styling Mousse
Fine
Fine hair is notorious for being oil-prone and body-challenged. To give your otherwise limp locks some extra height and holding power, aim for volumizing, thickening and texturizing products.
SHAMPOO:
Résistance Bain Volumizing Shampoo and R&Co Dallas Thickening Shampoo
CONDITIONER:
Kérastase Densifique Masque Densité and R&Co Dallas Thickening Conditioner
STYLING:
Kérastase Résistance Volumizing Spray and R&Co Dallas Thickening spray
THICK
Unlike the latter, thick hair has plenty of volume and no issue holding shape—whether or not said shape was intended. Thick hair is typically coarser and easily dehydrated, so conditioning products that will moisturize and smooth strands are essential to keeping it healthy.
SHAMPOO:
Oribe Shampoo for Moisture & Control
CONDITIONER:
Oribe Intense Conditioner for Moisture & Control
STYLING:
Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil
WAVY
While lusted after by many a beach/island/essentially anywhere-goer, without proper care (read: copious amounts of detangler), natural wavy hair can very quickly turn from Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model to Royal Ascot-reminiscent headwear. To reduce frizz and make hair more manageable, aim for hydrating products that will smooth the hair follicle, add shine and enhance the hair’s natural texture.
SHAMPOO:
Nuance Salma Hayek Blue Agave Curls & Waves Shampoo
CONDITIONER:
Nuance Salma Hayek Blue Agave Curls & Waves Conditioner
STYLING:
Nuance Salma Hayek Blue Agave Wave Enhancing Styling Swirl and Nuance Salma Hayek Texturizing Sea Salt Spray
CURLY
Curly hair is naturally frizzy and dehydrated, so it’s important to avoid products that contain alcohol and sulfates, as they will strip the curls of their moisture and life. To increase one’s natural definition, lock in moisture and avoid frizz, apply conditioning styling creams to hair while still wet, and save any oils until dry.
SHAMPOO:
Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo and Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo
CONDITIONER:
Moroccan Oil Hydrating Conditioner and Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair Conditioner
HAIR MASK:
Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask
STYLING:
Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream, Intense Curl Cream and Hydrating Style Cream
