This might sound a little, well, ignorant, but you’ll have to bear with us—we’re from the northern hemisphere and any experience with the land down under comes from limited tropes such as surfers and very beautiful bikini bodies. (Not the worst things, but we were pretty sure there was way more than that—just like there’s more to our home and native land than, um, snow.) And yeah, let’s just say we figured it out on day one, when after a few shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we wandered into Parlour X (just recently relocated to the Paddington landmark, St. Johns Church), only to be confronted with carefully curated racks of Stella McCartney, Valentino and Balmain. Seriously guys, what have we here? Beautiful beaches and a shopping mecca? Maybe Sydney is paradise after all.
And of course, being who we are, we had to get to the bottom of this very happy (very expensive) surprise. Not so surprising? The owner turned out to be as tuned-in with fashion as her store obviously is—a.k.a. on our level. And when we finally gained access to her home, well, it was kind of like being at home far away from home, or something like that.
We’ll paint you a picture: Eva Galambos, the founder and buyer of Parlour X, not only walks the walk and talks the talk (she counts her buying trips to Paris as precious and scores some of the best Saint Laurent we’ve ever seen), she is literally living for fashion—what we mean when we say “on our level.” We mean, when we unearthed a particularly breathtaking Comme des Garçons coat, she practically became teary-eyed. And we soon came to realize, that while her piles of rare CHANEL, Céline and Balenciaga reside close to her heart, nothing gets her going like CdG. “I have never been so emotional in a buying appointment ever,” she said of her first meeting with the brand. “It was thrilling!” Eva, we totally get it.
