Doing Valentine's Day Right: A How-To

Trust us when we say that Iris Apfel, Anya Ziourova and Leigh Lezark’s heart-melting love stories are inspiration enough. In collaboration with BCBGMAXAZRIA.

Doing Valentine's Day Right: A How-To
Renée Rodenkirchen
We’ll be honest: sometimes Valentine’s Day doesn’t give us the most loving, generous or warmest feelings. We mean, past Valentine’s Day activities have included mass get togethers at a unsettlingly cheap Greek restaurant whereupon the largest and least expensive bottles of red wine were purchased en masse; making heart-shaped waffles with our loved-up parents (and only them); drinking (another) bottle of wine (did we mention we were alone?) as we angrily switch between romantic comedies on Netflix before indulging in self-pity over Blue Valentine. Suffice it to say, there’s been a fair amount of cynicism and just the teeniest tiniest bit of self-loathing. So sue us.

But this Valentine’s Day, well, we decided to get ourselves an attitude adjustment helped along by BCBGMAXAZRIA (it’s crazy what pretty clothes can do to a girl). And, okay, so maybe this V-Day will be another solo mission, but that doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in a little self-love and appreciate what we do have (a full shoe closet, a lot of very good friends willing to take on a bottle or two with us and some promising swipe rights).
This Valentine’s Day, we’re all making ourselves feel good (rather than if-Ryan-and-Michelle-can’t-make-it-work-who-can depressed) and making it special—in our best-dressed, of course. So we asked three of our favorite love-positive women, Leigh Lezark, Anya Ziourova and Iris Apfel (all totally inimitable and inspirational) about their respective meet-cutes (on a bus, during New Years Eve, at a café) and what it is that makes them feel so special. It’s heartwarming in a completely IRL, non-cynical, falling in love with love way.
