5 Things We Crossed Off Our Bucket List in 2014

Inspired by Amex, how we grabbed The Coveteur life by the metaphorical horns this year, from flying to Dubai to participating in a CHANEL show.

5 Things We Crossed Off Our Bucket List in 2014
Guys, 2014 has been a pretty big year:Beyoncé got bangs, lost them and went On the Run with Jay Z; Kim K broke the internet; Rihanna wore a rhinestone-encrusted but otherwise sheer gown to pick up a CFDA award that recognized her as a style icon. Stuff happened. And after we recently had the pleasure of speaking at an #AmexLife panel—at which we talked about, well, living what one might call the good life—we realized we’ve done pretty well ourselves this past year. #AmexLife is all about inspiring people to enjoy the big and small enriched moments in our everyday lives, whether you're a Cardmember or not. Let’s just say that with the many items we were able to cross off our bucket list, those "enriching" moments were occurring on the regular. And, okay, so it was kind of hard to do, but we decided to revisit and narrow it down to the five that we still kind of can’t get over. These are the opportunities that have had us picking up and taking off with literally a day’s notice and saying, well, yes (resoundingly) without hesitation. Consider this our ICYMI recap of a very busy year. Indulge us, please?

1.

Dubai (Twice!)

We always kind of knew that this Middle Eastern city of skyscrapers and massive malls (Ski hill? Check. 96,000 square foot shoe store? Check) would be our paradise, but we can tell you that nothing really prepares you for the somewhat overwhelming excess that is Dubai. But, guys, as Amex says, you kind of have to just dive in, and that’s exactly what we did: yes to racing on a Formula 1 track on Yas Island; yes to indulging in the plush bathrobes and spectacular pool at the Waldorf Astoria; yes to bartering at the Gold Souk with Vogue editor Lynn Yaeger; yes to reverting back to childhood (kind of) during a day at the waterpark with a CHANEL model; and yes, obviously, to sitting runway-side for Karl Lagerfeld’s Middle Eastern-themed CHANEL Cruise show. Trust us when we say it was a whirlwind interspersed with plenty of shopping, eating and, um, revelry. And when we were asked back just a week after flying home? Well, we said yes (‘cause duh).

2.

The Italian Riviera Jet Setters’ Wedding

So maybe you’re thinking that weddings can be a little tame, a little overwrought and somewhat, well, commonplace. But hear us out, because when it comes to Erica Pelosini and her now husband Louis Leeman, it was more of an excuse for an all-out, weekend-long fashion-fuelled extravaganza, with guests including Christie Brinkley, Brian Atwood, Olivia Palermo and Magdalena Frackowiak, all brought together to celebrate love (and fashion and food and wine) in the island of Capri. To be honest, we were just happy they invited us along. And, okay, so the wedding ceremony itself was a gorgeous and romantic as one would expect, complete with a custom Peter Dundas for Pucci dress and the bride being carted off on a miniature flat bed, but the surrounding events, including a late night rehearsal dinner under the lemon trees at Da Paolino, a bridal shower in which the party wore matching Mary Katrantzou lovelies and a picturesque boat trip around the island to top it all off, really brought the weekend full circle. It’s no wonder we dropped serious Amex points to take planes, trains and automobiles (and boats) (seriously) to get there on time.

3.

Joining the CHANEL Protest

Paris Fashion Week has become a biannual event around these parts (aren’t we lucky?), but when we got a mysterious and top secret call from CHANEL requesting the presence of our photographer, Jake, way earlier than the invitation detailed, the whole thing suddenly looked a whole lot less usual (not that you can ever really call Paris usual). But you don’t say no to CHANEL, right? And so there we were at the Grand Palais, bright and early in the morning as the likes of Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner practiced their walk. And we practiced our leap onto the runway to photograph the fleet of models as they completed the protest finale. We mean, it’s not everyday that you’re asked to participate in a Lagerfeld production. And, okay, so we weren’t quite at Binx Walton's level and wearing those crazy-cool suits ourselves or anything, but we’ll always have the pictures, right?

4.

Victoria’s Secret Takes London

The whole Victoria’s Secret Angel’s taking the stage thing has kind of become an annual obsession around here, but when the lingerie behemoth announced they would be taking it overseas this year (and to London no less), we pretty much started planning the whole latter half of the year around it. What is it about a change in location that seems to reenergize a show that’s been seen literally by millions of people for years? (Then again, we guess it’s only natural to get, um, excited about seeing the world’s most beautiful women walk a runway in wings and lacy underwear while the likes of Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande provide a soundtrack.) Cue a massive backstage area where we caught up with Karlie Kloss, Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo while they were primped by the likes of Dick Page, and cue us dressed to the nines in black tie for the VIP show that evening, before heading to the after party with everyone from Chiara Ferragni and Natalie Massanet to the Angels and T. Swift herself.

5.

Dior Goes to Tokyo

A thirteen-hour flight from Toronto to Tokyo is nothing when a Raf Simons’ Dior show hangs in the balance. Oh, and the whole Tokyo thing—a first around these parts. Let’s just say that visions of fresh caught sashimi, Comme des Garçons in its natural habitat and, well, we frankly couldn’t even fathom what else were dancing in our heads. Cut to Dior-emblazoned taxis picking us up at Haneda Airport, a fully Dior-ified suite upon arrival at our hotel, a sushi lunch that put our aforementioned dreams to shame (and had us reaching for our Amex cards) and an appropriately stunning showing from Raf Simons come show time (but we guess that's to be expected now, right?). Think a Blade Runner-esque, sci-fi fantasy complete with Manga maquillage and bubbles raining down throughout the presentation. And shown in a sumo arena, no less. Then again, we guess when Dior comes to town, anything is possible.
