Meet the Best Green Beauty Products
It's inevitable: just when you think your makeup bag is safe and up to snuff, along comes some study espousing a laundry list of commonly-found cosmetic ingredients that seep through your pores and will cause you to grow three heads. Upon realizing the sheer poundage of lipstick you'll allegedly ingest in a lifetime, you go and stock up on an array of "green" products, only to be left with a year's worth of coconut oil and lipsticks and foundations that vanish from your face by the time you finish your morning cappuccino. While we don't advocate ditching the entirety of your beauty cabinet, here are the green(ish) beauty swaps that won't have you sacrificing coverage or color payoff. And won't slowly poison you either.

Stop us if you've heard this one before, but when it comes to concealers with ingredients that will actually make your skin happy, RMS pretty much has the whole game beat. While you may want to sit this one out if coconut oil causes you to break out, Uncoverup is ideal even if you're not necessarily seeking it out for its squeaky-clean ingredient list alone. And don't let the name fool you––its super-creamy formula allows for coverage you can sheer out with just a few dabs where you need them or build up to your exact liking. This bad boy is also, no lie, sold at the juice bar adjacent to our office, so you know it's good.
A lip color formulated without synthetic ingredients or petroleum that doesn't wimp out when it comes to the hue? Yeah, you can count us in. Bite Beauty's lip products come in every formula imaginable and a full range of berries, reds, pinks and neutrals, so there's no missing your usual go-to red when you make the switch, either.
Confession: we often find ourselves feeling slightly wary of powder products. And while we love a good glow, there's a fine line between a little radiance and full-blown greaseball. Enter W3ll People's Realist X, a loose, translucent finishing powder that sucks up shine without looking dull.
There are loyalists that will always back their favorite kohl-y crayon or liquid liner, but any real aficionado can agree that gel liner is the perfect happy medium: it's long-lasting and precise and will stay put in your waterline without the intimidation factor that comes with jabbing yourself with something that resembles a writing utensil. Pür Minerals' take comes in a little silver pot, won't crease or fade and is free of parabens, tar and fiber (although the shade choices, inky black and matte violet, are somewhat limited).
When it comes to cosmetics, we're suckers for one thing: foolproof application (read: with your fingers, sans mirror). Cov-alum (and green goddess) Josie Maran's Cheek Gelée is just that: a pretty gel blush that you can build up to more intense hues (ranging from tangerine to fuchsia to merlot) or leave as a sheer wash of color. And is that not the prettiest product name ever?
Yup, RMS again. But can you blame us? Their cleverly-named eye polishes are just the thing for shimmery, sheer lids (we're especially into 'Inspire' for a '70s Playboy cover vibe and 'Lunar' for everyday wear) and will change everything you thought you knew about cream shadows, especially when it comes to creasing and migrating off your eyelid.
We know you can't imagine parting with your usual mascara, and that the very concept of a more eco-friendly option might have your skepticism meter turned all the way up to 10. But formulated with organically harvested ingredients like beeswax, orange oil and tapioca starch, Physician's Formula's FakeOut relies on miniscule fibers to beef up wimpy lashes. Twiggy who?
We wouldn't be entirely shocked to find that this compact already resides in your makeup bag: there's a reason why Tarte's Amazonian Clay range has a rabid following. Not only is it the matte bronzer perfect for sculpting and contouring, it's also mineral, oil, paraben and talc free. Need we say more?
